The recent unprecedented video footage of a giant squid filmed in its deep ocean habitat has renewed interest in the enormous — and yet still mysterious — species. It’s believed that giant squid (genus Architeuthis) can grow up to 55 feet long. The individual captured on video via a small submarine located in the North Pacific Ocean was about 30 feet long and silver and gold in color, marine biologist Edie Widder, who helped to shoot the footage, said. Her colleague Tsunemi Kubodera added that the squid was missing its two longest tentacles. Cephalopod experts are intrigued by the world record footage.

“Mark Ciavarella Jr, a 61-year old former judge in Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison for literally selling young juveniles for cash. He was convicted of accepting money in exchange for incarcerating thousands of adults and children into a prison facility owned by a developer who was paying him under the table. The kickbacks amounted to more than $1 million.”

This man, James Verone, robbed a bank for one dollar. Why only one dollar? Because he knew that in prison he could get the medical care he could not afford with his part time salary as a convenience store clerk. He was approved for food stamps, but they did little to help his finances. Between his back problems, carpel tunnel, and arthritis, he simply couldn’t handle the pain any longer.

On June 9th, he sent a letter to his local paper, the Gaston Gazette, that stated: “When you receive this a bank robbery will have been committed by me. this robbery is being committed by me for one dollar. I am of sound mind but not so much sound body.”

He then took a cab to the RBC Bank, and handed the teller a note asking for one dollar and medical attention. He quietly took a seat in the lobby and waited for police to arrive.

Since Verone only stole one dollar, he was only charged with larceny. His bail, which he doesn’t plan to pay is set at $2,000, reduced from the normal $100,000. He’s scheduled to see a doctor this Friday, and hopes to get foot surgery, back surgery and to have a protrusion on his check treated.

To me, this is the perfect example of how disturbingly corrupt and unjust our health care system has become under HMO’s. For this man, or any person for that matter, feels that he needs to be imprisoned just to see a doctor, is ridiculous.

This is exactly what I hate about America. Why is it that you can buy an entire house with money you don’t have, but still can’t apply for health care if you don’t meet the requirements? That’s messed up.

This is what sick people in America are resorting to. But BEST HEALTHCARE SYSTEM IN THE WORLD, right guys?

As a feminist and a creator, one of my greatest fears is making something that fails my own belief system. It’s a deep, vast fear and when it gets ahold of me.

I fear this too.

On top of creating characters and work that does this, I also know that I will play roles that do this. I will be a part of this system.

But I take comfort that there are women out there, like Natalie Dormer for example, that I can look up to. Women who know they are playing women in a patriarchy, written in large part by misogynists, but who don’t abdicate their responsibility to those women or their audience. Women who work extra hard to breathe as much real life, as much humanity, and complexity and pathos into those roles as they can.

This will be my weapon.

Final Design 1 project that I started on 9 hours ago.

Handmade Type & Expressive Design. All type for a quote or lyric was to be made by hand and laid out in an unconventional fashion.

The type was made by running a live video feed of each individual letter displayed by my laptop from my iPhone’s camera, through a crummy VCR, through a coaxial converter into an 1980s portable black and white tube TV. Each letter displayed on the TV was then photographed by a tripod mounted camera with various levels of analogue distortion.
